Torkoal is a quadrupedal tortoise-like Pokémon. It features a massive, black, rock-like shell with holes that light red. It has reddish-brown skin and gray-black streaks on its legs and neck. It has a lengthy neck and its eyes seem to be closed all the time. Torkoal lives in mountains and volcanic environments, where it searches for enormous coal resources. It fills the empty holes in its shell with coal and then burns it for energy.

Torkoal becomes immovable when it runs out of coal to burn since coal is its source of energy. Torkoal will perish if the fire within his shell goes out. A Torkoal is in good health if the smoke erupting from its shell has a high velocity. It sounds like a locomotive horn when it breathes smoke from its nostrils and the top of its back.
