On May 1st, Niantic announced On May 1 at 1:00 PM PST until May 14, a new event will be held. Fighting-type Pokemon will be simpler to locate in the wild during the event. There will also be unique perks for raiding and gym fighting:
- Shiny Makuhita confirmed

- Losing a raid also gives you this bonus(only available once per raid)
- "Several actions at Gyms will yield bonuses, including a 2x Badge multiplier"
- Badge rewards from Gyms will be doubled
- "Spinning the Photo Disc at Gyms will also yield more items!"
Pokémon GO has debuted a new event to kick off the month of May, and it will focus on an often-overlooked type.
The Battle Showdown event will, in addition to other perks, enhance the number of fighting-type Pokémon that spawn over the whole map during the course of the next two weeks, until May 14. You will always get 3,000 stardust for completing any raid, 2x XP for gym and raid bouts, and at least one rare sweet.
Also, gyms are receiving momentary bonuses. Your favorite gyms will provide you more perks thanks to a 2x badge multiplier, while spinning gyms will reward you with additional goodies. There is no information on what unique boxes may be offered for sale on this occasion, but I would be surprised if there weren't any.
What about the combatants who will attend? These are the fighting types—or part-fighting types—that you could see appear across three generations. That would be my assumption, however I'm not sure whether they are more likely to hatch from eggs as well:
-
- Mankey
- Primeape
- Machop
- Machoke
- Machamp
- Hitmonlee
- Hitmonchan
- Tyrogue
- Hitmontop
- Makuhita
- Hariyama
I would certainly attempt to get some high IV variants of the fighting types Machamps and Hariyama, either in the wild or via evolutions, even if they aren't the most glamorous in Pokémon GO. These Pokémon may be very helpful against some raid monsters.
As there haven't been many Pokémon GO events that concentrate so heavily on pure gym and raid benefits, this one stands out from the others. Even with the most recent update many months ago that significantly altered them from launch, I still believe the overall gym idea needs some updating. Gyms have been somewhat left behind in the Pokémon GO meta, with their benefits not really keeping up with other activities in the game. That is still not at the proper level.
I contend that Pokémon GO's whole fighting system isn't either. While I don't anticipate a return to turn-based fighting, I do believe that they should concentrate on drastically improving combat in this game since it is one of its weaker aspects, even if it is now adequate. I truly do hope they would go back to the drawing board for combat. It has so much potential, and I hope they keep working to make it better.
Prepare to acquire those fighting types because the Battle Showdown event begins tonight at 1 PM PDT.
