Lunar New Year in 2020

The release time for the upcoming Pokemon Go Lunar New Year Event for 2020. Niantic has announced some real-world events for Pokémon Go and Harry Potter Wizards Unite. But, before these exciting occasions come about, Pokétrainers have a Lunar New Year Event for the first month of 2020 to look forward to. Here you’ll discover its release time. In addition to announcing real-world events for their two most popular mobile properties, Niantic has also shared that the February community day for Pokémon Go will be decided by votes from the community. You’ll be able to start voting on February 1st by completing a special research task and the optional Pokémon will be between Vulpix, Rhyhorn, Dratini and Machop. Lunar New Year in 2020 was the third Lunar New Year event in Pokémon GO.[1]   Minccino Limited Research was available during this event. The Lunar New Year Event in Pokémon GO is about to begin, and Trainers are in for a treat as we usher in the Year of the Rat. A new Limited Research event can be completed featuring Minccino, and red Pokémon are the overall theme for the coming weeks. Especially lucky Trainers may find themselves a Shiny Gyarados.

Seeing Red, Red, Red!

As we prepare for a year of wealth and good fortune, red Pokémon will be appearing more often in the wild from Friday, January 24 through to Monday, February 3. This means that Trainers can expect to see an influx of Charmeleon, Vulpix, Voltorb, Jynx, Magmar, Magikarp, Flareon, Slugma, Wurmple, Corphish, Kricketot, and Foongus while out and about in the wild.

Hatch Those Eggs For A Shot At Darumaka

Red Pokémon won’t just be appearing more often in the wild, they will also be hatching from 7km Eggs. Players can expect to hatch more Shuckle, Foongus, and - for the first time in the game - Darumaka, the Zen Charm Pokémon. Bundle up and start walking to try and get as many 7km eggs hatched as you can!

Shiny Gyarados? Yes, please!

By far the most important find one could make as we celebrate the new Lunar Year would be a red, Shiny Gyarados. Normally, there is nothing a player can do to increase their odds of finding a Shiny Pokémon in the wild, so events like the Lunar New Year are the best opportunity to try and find one with the increased chance added to spot one.

Be Generous To Receive Prizes In Return

Being altruistic solely for the purpose of being rewarded later seems strange, but that is exactly what will be happening during the event. Gifts will have an increased chance of awarding Rare Candies, so players should try and send and receive as many gifts as possible with their friends to maximize the chance at loot. The odds of becoming Lucky Friends is also increased during the event. For the unfamiliar, Lucky Friends is what all players should strive for after increasing the relationship level all the way to Best Friends. Doing so will make your next trade with that person unique, as both traded Pokémon will turn into Lucky Pokémon, which cuts the power up Stardust cost in half for each. Since becoming Lucky Friends normally takes months of daily friendship raising, now is a great time to work on it during the Lunar New Year Event. Limited-Time Research

To commemorate the Year of the Rat, players will be able to participate in a Limited Research event which awards Minccino, the Chincilla Pokémon. This is clearly a missed opportunity, as a Shiny Rattata would have been far more thematically appropriate, but Minccinos are still nice. Trainers will be able to use a Unova Stone to evolve Minccino into Cinccino as well. Players will need to be quick to grab their own Minccino, as it will only run on February 2 from 2-5pm local time, and features the following:
  • Field Research: Minccino Limited Research tasks will allow you to encounter Minccino.
  • Other Pokémon that fit the theme of the Year of the Rat will appear more often, including Rattata, Raticate, Pikachu, Sandshrew, both Nidorans, Sentret, Marill, Zigzagoon, Plusle, Minun, Bidoof, and Patrat.
  • 5 km Eggs: Minccino will be hatching more frequently from 5 km Eggs. After the event ends, Minccino will continue to be available in 5 km Eggs.
  • Shiny Minccino can also be located for the luckiest of Trainers.
This last point of the Limited Research is worth emphasizing, because while the developers state that Mincinno will continue to be found in 5km eggs after the event, no such comment is made about finding them in the wild. As such, 5km eggs may be the exclusive way to find more Mincinnos in the near future.
