Nihilego is an Ultra Beast who looks like a jellyfish. The bell is semi-translucent and surrounded by white star-shaped patterns. The bell's wavy rim stretches outward and is vivid blue. It has gelatinous tentacles that give it a somewhat humanoid form. A cape or long hair is formed by many tentacles meshing together, while four shorter tentacles resemble shorter hair and arms. The legs of the human figure are made up of two lengthy tentacles. It is sometimes observed behaving like a young girl, in addition to its form. Nihilego's body is comprised of many varieties of glass, according to concept art.

Nihilego is a parasitic creature capable of injecting a neurotoxic that quietly affects the thoughts and behaviors of any person or Pokémon that becomes its host by latching onto one's cranium. This neurotoxic induces tremendous emotions of excitation while producing a lack of inhibitions, thereby bringing out any hidden potential inside the host while wearing away at their brains. Nihilego's actual intelligence levels are unclear, but according to Wicke, Aether Foundation research indicates that it operates mostly on a self-preservation impulse. In the anime, Nihilego have the ability to create illusions and view human memories. Nihilego also shown feelings beyond than self-preservation and the capacity to heal humans in the anime.
