Update 11/22: We're up to 1.2 billion. Still on track, overall.
This year's Thanksgiving celebration in Pokémon GO comes with a twist. It's a "Global Catch Challenge," which means that all in-game incentives are now related to players worldwide capturing a set amount of Pokémon: 3 billion over the course of six days for the highest tier, which unlocks East Asia's regionally unique Pokémon for the whole globe. It's a difficult industry fraught with uncertainty, but the community looks to be on
the right course. Niantic said last night that players have already collected 500,000,000 Pokémon, paving the path for the first prize tier. This means longer lures, double experience, and, most importantly, more Pokémon spawning globally.
That puts the community on pace to complete, particularly considering that things should pick up speed from here on out. Not only do experience benefits increase the likelihood that people will go out there and play, but the first day got off to a sluggish start as time zones all over the globe began rolling with what was deemed the first day of catching in any particular location. Each 24 hours of catching now seems like a complete 24 hours, and I expect the numbers to improve over the next several days, even though American catches may suffer due to Thanksgiving and accompanying travel.
Some perplexing details: I have yet to get a push notice about this event, and there is no in-game pop-up when I launch the app. It means the only way to learn about the worldwide catch challenge is to follow the game on social media or via blogs. It's a rather amusing omission in an event that seems to demand all players, active and passive, to pitch in and perform their parts, but it's also a remarkable tribute to how attentively gamers are watching what's going on with the game, whether or not the app informs them. A committed player base for Pokémon GO, like usual, has a way of redeeming the game despite its own blunders.
Nonetheless, it's encouraging. Failing to fulfill the catch challenge would be a significant setback for a game that has been dealing with something like to an excitement gap for more than a year. Nobody hates to fail, and 3 billion is such a high amount that individual participants might easily get disoriented. Niantic has also promised additional feature improvements in the coming days, which
remain a mystery but must be related to the developer's difficulty to deploy the poorly-conceived EX Raids in some manner.
